World Breastfeeding Week 2010

This week (August 1-7, 2010) is World Breastfeeding Week. The US Surgeon General, Dr. Regina Benjamin, says she is committed to "promoting and supporting optimal breastfeeding practices with the ultimate goal of improving the public's health. This is because breastfeeding is the best source of infant nutrition, and it provides immunologic protection and health benefits both to breastfeeding mothers and to the children they nurse."

She points out that the new Health Care Law (Affordable Care Act) requires that employers provide a space for nursing mothers to express milk and that health plans offer counseling and support, no copay, for nursing mothers or mothers who want to breastfeed.

According to information from the National Conference of State Legislation, employers must have at least 50 employees to be required to offer the space and time, and employees will not be due compensation during these periods.
